Cherry Blossoms at the Break of Dawn (2018)
Asakura paints on paper a large four-panel folding screen depicting the quintessentially Japanese subject that is the cherry blossom, in full bloom at the break of dawn. One can feel the warmth of Spring in mythic splendor, wherein the darkness starts to fade to the sunlight of morning. Asakura’s wide gradation of colour is achieved using only one ink, and the full spectrum of the tree and its petals, painted lusciously in intricate detail, can be observed, with varying shapes and colours conceived in majestic glory. This cherry blossom is not simply a figurative depiction of the tree itself, but captures the tree in almost mythical proportions within Asakura’s wild imagination.
