A LIGHT HOUSE CALLED KANATA A LIGHT HOUSE CALLED KANATA
Legato - Damascus Steel by Kosuke Kato
The young Kosuke Kato wields the adamantine metal that is Damascus steel with a minimal elegance, transforming the austere and medieval metal into a compelling medium for abstraction. In Kato’s steel facades are the seven seas of serenity, an eternal loop that plays on and on, his silhouettes flowing into existence, accentuating the raw beauty of Damascus in vistas never before seen within this notoriously difficult material to manipulate. With his feature work at his debut exhibition at Yufuku in the summer of 2016 being acquired by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and with consecutively sold-out works at international art fairs such as TEFAF Maastricht and the Seattle Art Fair, Kato’s path in metal is revolutionising the world of Damascus, and his star is quickly garnering great attention amongst metal aficionados and fans of contemporary art alike. Legato marks a new chapter in the artist’s career, with wildly oscillating forms that animate the metal into something fluid, soft, and strikingly ethereal.
