A LIGHT HOUSE CALLED KANATA A LIGHT HOUSE CALLED KANATA

end of the world supernova

Kanjiro Moriyama is a game-changer. The symbolic leader of a younger generation of emerging Yufuku artists in their late 20’s to early 30’s who are creating wildly imaginative artworks far removed from and which vanquish preconcep-tions of what their respective materials can achieve aestheti-cally, the artist has mesmerised audiences for his uncanny ability to create dynamically oscillating sculptures from the humble potter’s wheel, widely known to not only be a tool for the mass production of vessels but notoriously difficult to create abstractions in clay. Moriyama has taken the device on its head, throwing large clay bodies on the wheel and uniting these separate parts together in the kiln – a feat easier said than done. But technique and material are only means to an end, and both thrown clay and fire are consciously chosen by Moriyama to conjure and realise a beauty that lies within. Luscious silhouettes combined with razor edges, drenched in glazes both white and black. The young Moriyama’s vision blooms brightly.
